2018-2-1 Bring Back the Herring Project (BBtH)

Partnered with MEGAREACH, we have designed a unique project to spotlight the water quality in reservoirs, rivers, estuaries and the Salish Sea itself.

The first phase of the project will be built using a proven successful mapping (GIS) system known as OPENSTREETMAP. The scaleable platform will be based upon a unique platform being rolled out on AWS for the global financial industry. Much consideration is being given to using BLOCKCHAIN technology for the samples to ensure historic data contamination is impossible in the future.

The first phase sees us explore “Importing water sample data published to the public as PDF files on the Municipality of Oak Bay website”.

Scientific illiteracy has run rampant across America

Scientific illiteracy has run rampant across America, with many scientists, doctors and journalists unable to carry on intelligent conversations about toxic heavy metals or the difference between genetic engineering and selective breeding.

2017-7-29: Thinking Watershed Pollution around Salish Sea

We continue to help promote the Bioregional Marine Sanctuary Vision : “To Restore Natural Animal Populations throughout the Salish Sea Bioregion to more than 50% of historic levels as soon as possible”

We are brain storming an opportunity to help organize and fund the development of a system which is sufficiently scaleable to have the ability to deliver a public real-time “DashBoard” to the health of all watersheds, rivers and lakes.

As a post script to the Canada 150 “Oak Bay Sings O CANADA” event it is worth noting that Hilary Coupland, the Choir Master, in greeting Syrian Violinist Sari Alesh, concluded her welcome with the very first public declaration of the Salish Sea Bioregional Marine Sanctuary Vision :

“Today on July 1, 2017, Canada’s 50th Birthday, we the people of Oak Bay Canada, gathered here today on the land of the L’kwungen, at the Oak Bay Marina (aka Spewhung Point) promise to work diligently to Restore Natural Animal Populations throughout the Salish Sea Bioregion to more than 50% of historic levels as soon as possible”

Surely this is one of the major goals for Canada as we begin the next fifty years.

It was also the location of Sealand where humans first realized that keeping ORCAs in captivity was inconsistent with the emerging human spirit.

BRING LOLITA HOME

As the World Spotlight is on Canada we are happy to do our little bit to also share this attention with “Tokitae/Lolita” and the “Bring Lolita Home” movement who are campaigning this month to bring Lolita home to Friday Harbour from a pen in Miami.

We will be delighted to have a local activist Diane McNally who has been working diligently to “Bring Lolita Home” :  She writes :

I’m in Victoria by the Cook St Village 🙂

I’ve been sending letters for 8 years to the Miami Seaquarium, about 120 each year and getting signatures on letters  and mailing them myself to the MSQ / Parques Reunidos etc.

This June was my 2nd year at Fernfest with info and letters.

I had a display at the central Library all month, and did an orca hat for kids event there.

This was my second year petitioning Victoria City council to proclaim Orca Month in the City of Victoria. Success x2 🙂

I’ve been published in the TC quite a few times re orcas over the years, last on “Stalking Orcas” re give it up with the whale watching, in a few days ago in Comment.

Another TC Comment from 2010: https://lolitatokitae.com/2010/10/20/orca-baby-born-at-sea-world-these-little-slaves-are-so-cute/

Looking forward to the event!
